[영어 문법] May 용법

오늘은 May 용법에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. 

언어학자들에 따르면 may는 can에 대체되어 언젠가 사라질지도 모른다고 합니다. 믿거나 말거나. 

그러나 여전히 많이 쓰이는 다음의 may의 관용적 표현 3가지를 알아보겠습니다. 

1. that ~ may : ~하기 위하여 

   She studied hard that she may pass the exam.  
   그녀는 시험에 합격하기 위해 열심히 공부했다. 

   = She studied hard so that she can pass the exam. 

   = She studied hard in order that she can pass the exam. 

   = She studied hard in order to pass the exam. 

   = She studied hard to pass the exam.

2. may well : ~하는 것은 당연하다 

   Mr. Kim may well get angry about the event.
   김씨가 그 행사에 대해 화내는 것은 당연하다. 

   = It is natural that Mr. Kim (should) get angry about the event. 

3. may as well : ~하는 것이 좋다, 낫겠다.

   You may as well go home. 너 집에 가는 게 낫겠어. 

   = You would rather go home. 

   = You had better go home.   

--> 그런데 had better는 경고성(?)의 의미가 있어서 안쓰는 게 좋습니다.
      would better ('d better) 도 실생활에서 편하게 쓰이기도 합니다. 
      would better의 정확한 표현은 would be better 입니다.
