Retain, keep, maintain 차이

오늘은 비슷하면서도 차이점이 무엇인지 애매한 retain, keep, maintain에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. 

먼저 keep이 제일 일반적인 표현이고, keep 과 retain은 의미가 같다고 보면 됩니다. 

retain = keep the possession of 인데, 즉, retain은 무언가를 지키거나 유지하는데 어떤 것의 소유로서 보관할 때 쓰입니다. 

maintain은 keep in existing condition or keep in good condition 으로, 그냥 어떤 것이 훼손되지 않도록 잘 보관하는 것을 의미합니다. 

아직도 구분이 애매하시다고요? 아래 예문을 보면 좀 더 의미가 명확해질 것입니다.

Retain: 

ex1)

I have studied very hard for the test, and I have found that I am doing well retaining the information.

ex2)

I tried to win, but that was difficult when my team was retaining information from me.

Keep: 

ex1) 

I have to keep trying or else I will fail!

ex2)

I keep my grandmother’s necklace around my neck all the time. 

Maintain: 

ex1) 

The human body must maintain its homeostasis and metabolism.

ex2)

If you maintain this behavior, you will not be allowed to return to school
